Korhogo: after good rains, cotton farmers hope for a bigger harvest
In villages around Korhogo, cotton growers say they are optimistic a few weeks before the harvest: the July and August rains were regular, and the plots visited this week show plenty of bolls. Several cooperatives expect a larger harvest than last year, without giving figures yet.
Cotton remains the Poro region's main cash crop, and a good season feeds the whole local economy: transport, trade, schools and health spending. Growers point out, however, that pests such as the jassids that caused production to fall a few years ago could still cut yields before the harvest.
Cooperatives are also waiting for the announcement of the purchase price for the new season, set each year by the industry body together with the State. Several growers say they hope at least to keep last year's price, given rising fertiliser and labour costs.
What the creator verified this week: the condition of three plots in villages near Korhogo and the accounts of two cooperative leaders. What remains to be confirmed: official production forecasts and the purchase price for the 2026-2027 season.
